Game Development Education in Czechia
With the dynamic growth of the gaming industry, there has been a rapid development of related study programmes and online courses at both university and college level and in selected secondary schools in Czechia. There are currently eight public universities or colleges offering game-development focused or related studies, both theoretical and practical, as well as specific teaching modules including studio-based teaching.

There is an effort to facilitate a more significant connection with the practical aspects of game development, whether by involving experts in teaching or by offering a wide range of internships, bringing students closer to practice and supplementing theoretical education with practical knowledge and skills. Internships offered by Czech studios such as Warhorse Studios or Bohemia Interactive, provide students with the opportunity to get an insight into their current projects. Representatives of game studios also regularly give lectures and tutorials to students at high schools and universities. One example is the Ateliér Duchů, a spin-off of the Studio of Game Media at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the Brno University of Technology, where current students can meet graduates and professionals from the industry through internships. Gamebaze, a game incubator, has also been established in Brno. Its main goal is to provide facilities, training and mentoring for gaming-related start-up projects. Gamebaze is a joint project of Game Cluster, JIC/KUMST and the GameDev Area. Charles Games was also established as a spin-off of Charles University Innovations Prague.

Czech Game of the Year Award, Student Game Winners: 2019 – Silicomrades (Outside the Fox) and 2021 – HATS! (Game Development Centre).
A selection of interesting student games: Meatmpkin (Ondřej Hráček), The Snooze (Design and Digital Technology – UMPRUM), Hrana (Buldozer), In An Unknown Ostrichverse (Kobliznik) and Forest (Ateliér Duchů).
There is also a number of Czech secondary schools offering courses related to game development, design and animation. In addition, there are specific interest groups and institutions dedicated to game education as a leisure activity. They focus on organising or participating in events such as international conferences, festivals, exhibitions or game jams (an event in which video game developers work in groups to conceptualize, design, and build a functioning version of a game project over a restricted period of time; either alone or in teams).
There are new studios emerging in Czechia, but the lack of qualified workforce is significantly hampering further development of the sector. The number of graduates is currently insufficient for the sustained growth of the gaming industry. Some jobs, such as game designer, game producer and 3D game artist, are officially registered as professions in the Czech National Register of Qualifications and are eligible for the state exam. They are included in the retraining courses scheme and are subject to registration of trade licenses. They are also recognized by the Czech Labour Office.
Studying at Czech public universities is free of charge as long as your degree is taught in the Czech language – see studyin.cz for more information.
